When is a referral advisable?
Referral to a Marriage & Family Therapist is appropriate for
individuals who are experiencing a relationship problem that adversely
affects their life and is one they desire help in solving. Counseling,
therapy, psychotherapy are all terms used by individuals who desire
assistance in acquiring mental and emotional well-being.
What do MFC and MFT/IMF followed by a number indicate?
Both MFC (Marriage, Family and Child Counselor) and MFT (Marriage
and Family Therapist) indicate the person is licensed by the State
of California to provide psychotherapy, pursuant to the California
Business and Professions Code. The Board of Behavioral Science is
the licensing and regulatory body. An MFC/MFT professional has completed
at least a master's level degree, 3,000 hours of supervised experience
and has passed both a written and oral exam. An MFC/MFT is knowledgeable
of and adheres to a professional code of ethics.
