    Join CAMFT Executive Director, Joy Alafia, CAE, for an understanding about events, legislation, and internal association processes that are currently impacting CAMFT members.

    Designed for Mental Health Professionals, this presentation will discuss general CAMFT issues and the importance of a Professional Will. There will also be updates from BBS, as well as California and Federal legislative updates. Finally, discussion on why it is important to avail yourself of the Legal Consultation service CAMFT provides. There will be ample time for Q&A. 

    Learning Objectives

    By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Recall at least 3 recent/pending legislations and how marriage and family therapists may be impacted by the bills.
    2. Identify 1 resource for legal consultation for therapists.
    3. Identify important components of a Professional Will.

    About the Speaker

    Joy Alafia, CAE, brings more than 17 years of association leadership experience to her new position. She begins her new role at CAMFT after her tenure as the President and CEO of the Western Propane Gas Association (WPGA), where she has advocated for renewable propane and equitable access for alternative sources of clean energy. Joy has spoken around the world about the importance of sustainable energy and is credited with transforming the propane industry’s focus and shifting its priorities to the commercialization of net zero-carbon energy solutions.

    Looking for support implementing the new BBS changes affecting supervision? Could you use some feedback on issues that pertain to supervision in private practice? Curious about becoming a clinical supervisor and would like some insights from experienced supervisors?

    Starting October 8th, join us on the second Saturday of the month from 9-10:30 am for a facilitated, peer consultation group. Our first few meetings will be held via zoom and may turn into in-person as the group grows. After attending these groups, you may receive a letter of attendance which can be counted toward gaining the extra hours you may need to meet new supervision requirements.

    This ongoing Special Interest Group is free of charge but requires registration to receive the Zoom link.

    Focus of this Workshop  

    This 6-hour Live CE interactive presentation will review Digital and Traditional Boundaries and TeleMental Health Ethics all LMFTs, social workers, counselors, and licensed psychotherapists need to maintain. It will include clinical examples to highlight potential ethical conflicts, along with discussions of best practices and how to resolve conflicts. Time will be allocated to addressing never before considered concerns arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic and this new era of telemental health. In addition to the PowerPoint, the presentation will include small group discussions and polls as well as Q &A as time permits. 

    Topics to be covered are:

    • Digital and Traditional Boundaries
    • TeleMental Health Ethics
    • Different forms or types of consultations
    • Ethical, Legal and Clinical aspects of each clinical case
    • Common State Licensing Board Complaints: Inappropriate custody recommendations, Texting into the night, Drunk driving, Sex w/ current clients, etc.
    • Standard of Care: Myths and facts
    • Therapists Googling clients, Digital Boundaries
    • Responding to a negative YELP review
    • Practicing in the next phase of the COVID-19 epidemic
    • Ethical issues in social networking
    • Ethical issues in Telemental Health: Crossing state lines, emergencies, fitness, and more.
    • Boundaries in Therapy: Gifts, Touch, Dual Relationships, Bartering, Out-of-Office

    Learning Objectives

    At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

    1. Differentiate between ethical, legal, clinical, and risk management aspects of cases.
    2. Identify the three most common complaints of state licensing boards filed against licensed psychotherapists, social workers, and counselors.
    3. Describe the difference between boundary crossings and boundary violations.
    4. Identify the differences among various types of consultations.
    5. List at least three ethical considerations and challenges for mental health professionals arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
    6. Identify the most common myths and faulty beliefs regarding psychotherapy and counseling
