    Compassion Fatigue:
    From Awareness to Change

    with
    Dain Kloner, PsyD

    11:30 am-1:30 pm Friday May 17, 2019

    160 N. Oakland, Pasadena, CA 91101
    (Women's City Club of Pasadena)

    1.5 Hours CEUs

    Registration Fee Includes Luncheon Buffet

    Program Description

According to GoodTherapy.com, Compassion fatigue, also known as second-hand shock and secondary stress reaction, describes a type of stress that results from helping or wanting to help those who are traumatized or under significant emotional duress.

    COMMON SYMPTOMS:

    1. Chronic physical and emotional exhaustion
    2. Depersonalization
    3. Feelings of inequity toward the therapeutic or caregiver relationship
    4. Irritability
    5. Feelings of self-contempt
    6. Difficulty sleeping
    7. Weight loss
    8. Headaches
    9. Poor job satisfaction

Although compassion fatigue is sometimes called burnout,  it is a slightly different concept. Unlike burnout, compassion fatigue is highly treatable and may be less predictable. The onset of compassion fatigue can be sudden, whereas burnout usually emerges over time. Additionally, severe cases of burnout sometimes require the person experiencing it to change jobs or occupations, but often measures can be taken to prevent or treat compassion fatigue before a change in work environment is required.

Compassion fatigue can be a precursor or a symptom of other stressors. Because therapists are trained to utilize compassion and empathy in order for therapy to be effective, they are particularly vulnerable to emotional stress and compassion fatigue. For therapists, compassion fatigue can have ethical and legal implications if left untreated, especially if they are providing therapeutic services that are not benefiting those under their care in therapy.

    Learning Objectives

At the end of the presentation participants will:

    • Understand the warning signs and symptoms of Compassion Fatigue and Burnout
    • Develop therapist self-care strategies to minimize negative impact while caring for others
    • Increase education and awareness about the impact of compassion fatigue on the mind and body
    • Create an action plan to prevent and/or manage the development of compassion fatigue

    • Earn 1.5 CEUs •
